RE: How to store Equalizer?

We just leave the Hitch Head on the truck with a Locking Hitch Pin.
I put the bars back in the original box in the pass-thru. Some on here have used canvas or plastic gun cases for the bars, or PVC Square channels strapped together or glued side by side for the bars and then stick in pass-thru.
With all the theft stories I see on here from around the Country, I don't think I would be leaving my Hitch Head behind connected to the TT all assembled, conveniently ready for someone else to back up and hitch to when we are away on half day outings. I might not have a TT to finish my trip in. :E

RE: how many times

We try to go once a month and I wash the roof beginning and end of Season, Sides, Rims, Tires, before every trip, Shine it Up! Wash the Front afterwards to get bugs off.

RE: Trailer Sway

We have the Wildwood 27RB. Last year on Interstate to Michigan, kept getting sucked into passing lane when trucks or other RV's came by. Was really a windy day, gusting 35-40 from the West side. Learned to watch the Driver mirror more and when I saw them coming, would hug the right side whiteline. That helped some.
This year I got more weight transferred to the front axle, sits much better now, axle drop equal within 1/4" front to back. Tows better. Using the Equal-i-zer.

RE: Awning Travel Locks

We haven't even used ours once yet because I fear it might not stay secured on a windy trip (like last year). Keep it Zip Strapped with some heavy ones.
I bought an Awning Clamp and trying to get time and good day on a Saturday weather wise to install it. It is a pretty simple design, but heavy linked strap. Beefier than I expected by the picture.
Once I get this on, the Zip Straps are coming off and we are rolling it out! ;)

RE: New uses for RV's

We have discussed converting ours to a rolling HotDog Wagon. Convert the dining table window to a Serving Window and fold-away Serving Counter. Just replace the window with a Full Screened Window with small Sliders at the bottom for passing cash and food through.
At least it would pay for itself at special events or the local County Fairgrounds events we have during the year.
For now, it is still Upper Michigan or Bust! this Summer, biggest trip ever staying at 4 different places over two weeks.
Maybe we will have to convert to the HotDog Wagon after we get back when the Gas Bill comes in the mail...

RE: strange noice while towing new TT

Ours does this. There are some Metal Product ID/Ratings Tags (like dog tags), one on each chain (the Safety Chains I am talking about), that flip around and play wind chimes on ours the whole time we are moving. I thought we were dragging chains too, but not so.

RE: HOT WATER TANK PROBLEM????

Make sure that the lines are bled well and that there are no air in the lines either. If I leave mine with no LP for a while it takes a few tries to get it to stop doing that.
This is another good point and possibility. Light the Gas Stove Burners, Fridge on Gas, get all the orange flame (air) out until it's all Blue, then try the HW Heater.

RE: HOT WATER TANK PROBLEM????

Check the thermocouple.
Sounds to me like the unit is starting properly but the thermocouple isn't sending back the electrical signal that the flame is on. So therfore the unit shuts off.
A safety feature of the thermocouple.
Happy trails,
That's my vote too. You can take a Mini Torch and put a low continous flame on the Thermocoupler Tip, make it glow slightly red and see if it keeps the Burner running. If you remove the Mini Torch flame and it cools down and quits you will know.

RE: My dumbest move yet!

I heard spoiled chicken tastes just like dead mouse...
or is that dead mouse Tastes like Chicken!?
Just told the family this story and they reminded me we did something similar, but caught it in time. One of our last trips out last season we roasted an 8 pack of Hot Dogs over the fire. Stuck them in the Micro to keep warm while we ate. Finished, cleaned up and left them in the Micro. Fortunately we found them the next morning at breakfast.

Maybe missed the Low Point Drains? I leave the Anode a little loose so it will leak off if anything in there, yet no critters getting in.

RE: New Info From Josh about Equal-i-zer Hitch Bolts (long)

the best torque wrenches typically available, without going to really over-the-top stuff, are from here: http://www.torqwrench.com/
They make them for Snap-on, for example. My main wrench is a Snap-on Beam type click wrench, made by them. I also have one of these: http://www.srtorque.com/tabeam.html
that I got when an aircraft maintenance company was being liquidated. Harder to use, simpler, but more accurate and more expensive than the snap-on, when new.
I have other wrenches for engine assembly, that sort of thing. FWIW, a wrench that is accurate in the 400 - 600 lb range will cost in the $1000 and up range and will be about 6 feet long, 3/4" or 1" drive.
Brian
An Equipment Maintenance friend found these Torque Wrenches for me.
Pittsburg 100-600#'s 42" Torque Wrench
Adapter Set
Here's a more expensive brand same torque settings:
Northern Tool 100-600# Torque Wrench
I also got two Grade 8 Bolts 3/4" x 5" with Lock Washers and Nuts today at the local TSC. Now I have to get a Deep 1 1/8" Socket for my 1/2" Drive. Can't reach the nut with the longer bolts.

RE: New Info From Josh about Equal-i-zer Hitch Bolts (long)

Now what about the bolts that hold the L brackets. The one on the left moves around no matter how tight the bolt is. What can be done to tighten the L bracket?
Is this the two long bolts around the frame holding the L Bracket Mounts, or is this the Single Set Bolt in the 5th hole (or whichever hole you use) ?
The L Bracket Set Bolt or Locking Bolt for the height adjustment allows for play. I think it even mentioned that in my setup papers.

Great Info! Thanks all and thanks Josh!
Guess I have another reason to go to the local TSC.
Now, could someone please tell me where to get good Torque Wrenches,
mine only goes to 150#. Have heard the ones that Click are best?
Would like to get up in the 350# to 400# range.

RE: 2001 Dodge Dakota Towing?

I'm pulling a 28' (29'10" end to end) I only have a 119.2" Wheelbase.
The Dakota QuadCab is 131" Wheelbase, he should be in better shape than I am as far as towing 28ft. We don't have any problems with sway using the Equal-i-zer. He is keeping the weight down around the 4500 dry area. We are around 4769 dry.

RE: Is this set up right?

Can someone please explain the "washers in the head" of an equalizer thing? We have an equalizer, and when the hitch is in, and the camper not hooked up, it rattles like there is extra room somewhere. Is that where the washers idea comes in?
That's just slop in the Hitch Receiver you are hearing when no camper hooked up. I was running a Hitch Quieter over mine until the retainer bolt snapped off in it last trip. The washers (usually 5 of them) are in the head filling the gap between the shank.
As others have said, the Washers tilt down the angle of the head putting more Downforce on the Bars at the L Brackets. Usually 5th hole from the top on the L Brackets. I was running 6th hole at the L Brackets with 5 washers, still not enough sway control and some extra wear at the front edge of the L Brackets. Now I am running 8 Washers and 5th hole, much better. Each TV is a little different height wise and all. That has to be compensated at the Shank first, then the Washer/Bracket adjustments can be fine tuned.

RE: How hard is it to install a Equal-i-zer hitch yourself?

I pre-assembled as much as I could at home on a table, then I had the Dealer watch me do the rest when I picked the trailer up. (they sold Reese). They did Torque the Ball for me using the Thinwall Socket and Breaker Bar that I had picked up at Tractor Supply Co.
I just removed the head at a campground two weekends ago and added three more washers for a total of 8 instead of the usual 5. Just used Standard Sockets to do that. Pretty easy to work with really.

RE: Holes in roof of newt TT

Interesting. I had one hole in my roof too when new, (Wildwood by Forest River) about the size of a lead pencil diameter. I emailed zoomed in pics to the dealer, put clear tape over it and then when it was a dry day, filled it with Dicor. Didn't seem to be any mold or dark coloring in the hole or water damage inside (stains) over the shower area.
Looked to me like a branch poked it possibly during transport from the factory.
If you have multiple holes I would seal it with clear shipping tape and get it back to the dealer for repairs. See what they want to do. I haven't had a problem with my dicor filled hole in over a year since.

RE: Trailer Wiring - Auxilliary Modification

Went to a rv show put on by a local dealer.
most of the units on display had the running lights lit up.
took a look and was amazed how simple it was.
they had taken a (Large) 15 amp automotive fuse and bridged two wires in the light/break harness to the trailer.
the two wires that were bridged are the ones beside the notched key way in the plug.
that simple.
Exactly! Just bridge Slots 3 and 4 with a Flat Blade Fuse and that is all you need. I keep one taped inside the door under the kitchen sink where silverware or other stuff is supposed to go. Stick it in when it gets dusk and take it out by 10 pm to keep the neighbors happy. :Z

RE: Happy Camper Odorless Tank Treatment

We were GEO Method last year. Started using HappyCamper this year, it is way better, less mess, easy! No odors at all. All contained in a little tub that fits in the bottom of the bath cabinet. We were very pleased! Got a lot more old stuff our of the tank too when backflushing this time.
